CORVID-19 is still here and you are asked to be safe whilst out in the North West of Scotland. Current restrictions have been relaxed recently. Even so, please do not go out in the area if you are showing signs of Corvid-19. When out paddling or hillwalking make sure you give people space - 1m at least and preferable 2m. Remember that if it feels too crowded then you can walk away and try somewhere else; the environment will still be there tomorrow. Also remember the emergency services, the RNLI and the MRT. They will come out to rescue you but they should not have to put themselves into danger from this virus.

Take Care Out There.

Ascent of Cul Beag

Ascent of Cul Beag
OS map : 15
start : Minor road 1km short of Linneraineach
gridref : NC129089
summary : Linneraineach - Cul Beag - Linneraineach
distance : 4.0km.
ascent : 700m.
time taken : 2hr. 40min.

Cul Beag rises dramatically from Loch Lurgainn. The slopes are very steep with crags on the west making this an impressive hill. As you would expect from a steep hill in this area, the views are spectacular. The route up the hill is steep but short.

The road beside Loch Lurgainn is single track and hence parking in the passing places is not allowed. However there are some spaces along the road where it is safe to park.

From the roadside follow the stalkers track that goes NE towards Loch Fionnlaidh. At some point around the Loch step off the track and climb the steep sloped towards the north ridge of Cul Beag. Pick a good line as this is patheless. Once on the ridge turn south and climb the final slopes to the summit. The summit is marked with a cairn topped with an impressive "peak" shaped rock. The views here are over much of Assynt but most especially Cul Mor. (2kms. 700m. 2hrs. 0min.)

Descent is via the uphill route. Hopefully you will have remembered the way you ascended the hill. Otherwise, and for a difference continue further down the north ridge and then make way down to the stalkers path. Return down the path to the minor road and the car. (2kms. 0m. 0hrs. 40min.)
