CORVID-19 is still here and you are asked to be safe whilst out in the North West of Scotland. Current restrictions have been relaxed recently. Even so, please do not go out in the area if you are showing signs of Corvid-19. When out paddling or hillwalking make sure you give people space - 1m at least and preferable 2m. Remember that if it feels too crowded then you can walk away and try somewhere else; the environment will still be there tomorrow. Also remember the emergency services, the RNLI and the MRT. They will come out to rescue you but they should not have to put themselves into danger from this virus.

Take Care Out There.

Foinaven is the grand hill of the north west of Scotland. Striking with the grey rock in summer sunshine. This is a big hill nearly reaching Munro status. A few years ago it was measured independently with all modern technology and sadly for many had lost a few feet over the years. So still a Corbett and a grand Corbett. It is situated in some very remote countryside and looking at the map there is no easy route up the hill. The route described comes down Strath Dionard from the north.

Park away from the road near to Gualin House.

Follow the track (bike possible) from the roadside down, south, Strath Diomard. At about 7km the stream out of Coire Duial is met. That is the end of the paths for a while. The route up heads for the col between Cnoc a'Mhadaidh and Ceann Garbh. Strike out over the open hillside to reach the col. Wet to start with, mixed rock and grad further up then more rock. Now folow the rocky hillside up Ceann Garbh and from here follow the ridge to the summit of Fionaven at Ganu Mor. There are two potential high points, the westerly is the tru top and the easterly has the better view. (11kms. 950m. 5hrs. 10min.)

The way back is the same way as up, but there are great views out to sea as well as over the vast area of North West Scotland. Not only is Fionaven a great hill withon this area but it is one of the best hills in Scotland and gives the walker a really mountain experience. Follow the ridge north to the col and then descend the slopes to reach the track and bike. Cycle back to the road at Gualin House. (11kms. 50m. 3hrs. 20min.)
